Author Tag
An author tag just contains your websites name. If someone searches for your company’s name, you want to make sure that you have the number one position for your companies’ name. An author tag will help your website achieve number one placement for your company’s name. Even if you already have number one placement for your company’s name, it is still a good idea to have an author tag.

Example:
<META NAME="author" CONTENT="Advantage Consulting Services">

The author tag contains the company name and is short. Do fill the author tag with keywords because that would be spam.

Alt Attribute
Alt text is the line of text you see pop up (in Internet Explorer, see note below) when you place your cursor over an image. It also displays a text representation of the image when the user has images turned off in their browser (this is the intended behavior). It is highly recommended that you utilize this area as it is required under accessibility laws and, is indexed by the search engines.

Note: Internet Explorer (IE) will display alt text when you hover your cursor over an element that utilizes the alt attribute. This is incorrect behavior as the alt text is designed to be displayed when the user has their images turned off while browsing. Other browsers such as Opera and Mozilla will not display the alt text on hover.

The alt attribute should not to be stuffed with keywords or phrases. The alt text should mirror the content of the image. If it is a graphic header, then your alt attribute should mirror the text in the graphic header.

Alternative text values should not exceed 80 characters in length. If more than 70-80 characters are required one should use the longdesc attribute as an alternative to alt text.

Hyperlinks
This area is overlooked by many when promoting a web site to the search engines. Many web sites utilize graphic representations of links. These are visually appealing, but the text in the image cannot be indexed by the spiders.

I always recommend an additional text navigation bar (SSI - Server Side Includes or Front Page Includes) somewhere on the page, usually at the top, right, bottom or left hand side. Link text should be concise, use keywords and phrases, and follow the same structure as the graphic navigation.

Robots Text File - robots.txt
The robots.txt file is a set of instructions for visiting robots (spiders) that index the content of your web site pages. For those spiders that obey the file, it provides a map for what they can, and cannot index.

Robots META Tag
There are many robot tags that people put on their website. There is a generic robot tag and there are specific robot tags. A generic robot tag concentrates on all search engines, while a specific robot tag concentrates on specific search engines, such as Google.

Example:
<META NAME="robots" CONTENT="index, follow">
This robot tag concentrates on all search engines.

<META NAME="GOOGLEBOT" CONTENT="INDEX, FOLLOW">
This robot tag concentrates on Google.

You can use more than one robot tag, but you should always use the generic robot tag.

It may be difficult to compile strong META tags, which is why you should use web ranking tools. Web ranking tools will make strong META tags for you and do much more for your website. We provide ranking tools, which can be accessed online.

HTML Comments Tag - HTML Markup
Title tag is the title of your website. You do not want to make the title too long because the shorter it is, the better. If you think about a title,  it is usually short, descriptive and to the point. That is how you want the title in your META tag to be. Your title should also be attractive because if you perform a search on a search engine, they will see your title, which is why it needs to attractive or else people will visit your website.

Example:
<html>
<head>
<title>Search Engine Optimization, Search Engine Placement, Search Engine Ranking</title>

This title is short and too the point. A title should never be more than 80 characters long and it should contain the keywords that you want to be found under when someone performs a search on a search engine. This title is made up of 3 descriptive phrases that the website makes up, which will help the website to be found under these key phrases: search engine optimization, search engine placement and search engine ranking. You do not want to make your title into a sentence; instead it should contain the keywords you want the website to be found under.
